Are you into mountain biking? Do you want to have more fun on the trail? We want to help you to ride better and we know a whole pile of skills that you can learn and practice!
All groups will learn about bike controls, braking, shifting, getting on and off the bike, good riding positions on your bike, how to climb hills, how to go down hills and over small rocks, scanning the trail so you can see what’s coming at you, and even how to corner faster! We split up our groups by age and by experience. But of you want top be with your friends then that is cool too!
We’ll always have a meeting place in a safe parking lot and start practicing there, and then we head out on the trails to practice what we're learning. We usually take some pictures and videos so you can see yourself riding and learn even more. And you can download them later is you like!
Don't forget snacks and a lunch if you're planning on riding all day.
Note that to add multiple riders you will need to check out each rider separately so you can enter each name.
We take kids seriously ! Ride Ottawa kids MTB clinics are the equivalent of kids ski lessons on bikes. We only offer professional lessons and teach kids of different ages the skills they need to ride and control their bikes safely, so they can have more fun on the trails. We are flexible and adapt to every group but it is important that kids come prepared to learn and follow along.
We offer sessions for kids and youths ages 8 - 14 who area bel to ride on easy trails for a minimum of 2 hours. It's OK if they have to walk a few features like small sticks and rocks or they are not ready to roll down hills. That is some of what we practice. After learning fundamental skills in an open, safe space, we hit trails for practice taking lots of stops. Kids need to have at lease one water bottle or hydration pack and a few snacks.
The purposes of this clinic are:
1. To be fun and sociable for all participants
(Riding with friends is almost always more fun than riding with parents)
2. To help develop an appropriate ABC skills foundation for mountain biking
(Agility, balance, coordination on the trail)
3. To promote skills confidence and riding self-esteem
(Controlled and safe practice and pacing gets results)
4. To provide an opportunity to develop appreciation for the outdoors
(We love living healthy and active outdoors!)
After registration we will send you information regarding the meeting place and links to our online waiver, rider information and emergency contact info sheet. Note that we require a parent or guardian to drop off and pick up your child at the lesson. If your child is travelling with a non-relative, we need this in writing prior to the course. Safety is our primer concern and we will not release children to ride home on their own or to other parents without authorization.
We start our lessons on-time, every time, and we need you to be early so we can check each bike is set up well and safe to ride. We HIGHLY recommend getting bicycles tuned up by a bike shop before your first lesson. If you need a recommendation, please ask!
We will need emergency contact information, a list of any allergies and medications, and health card information for each child. If your child has emergency medication, such as an Epipen, you MUST supply this to our instructor in a ziplock bag clearly labelled with your child's name, emergency contact information and health card number prior to the session.
At certain locations such as Camp Fortune, you are required to purchase a trail pass for your child and also complete their waiver. Please arrive early to allow time for this too.
We want to have everyone on our clinics, but we reserve the right at our sole discretion to cancel bookings and refund clinic payment where individual medical conditions are high-risk in Wilderness First-Aid conditions where emergency response times are over 30 minutes. If your child has special needs, you may be required to shadow the lesson to provide support if needed. Ride Ottawa is open to any ideas you have to accommodate different needs. Contact us if you would like to discuss how we can become more inclusive.
